Générallement, en Autriche le camping “libre” n’est possible qu’avec la permission des autorités locales ou des propriétaires. Concernant le bivouac, veuillez s´il vous plait tenir en compte les informations suivantes en anglais: The legal situation concerning camping in liberty is a little bit complicated in Austria and varies from province to province. I attached the original document for you, in which the legislation is described. One general rule for all over Austria: Camping is forbidden within the forest! Concerning camping in a an alpine surrounding (above the tree line) the following rules apply for the various provinces: - Carinthia: camping is strictly forbidden outside of campgrounds! - Upper Austria: Camping in tents is allowed above the tree line and outside of alpine pastures - Tyrol: camping is strictly forbidden outside of campgrounds!
- Salzburg: camping in tents above the tree line and outside of alpine pastures is not forbidden, but for groups it is recommendable to contact the local authorities and nature conservation agencies if the tour is deemed acceptable.
- Styria: Camping in tents is allowed above the tree line and outside of alpine pastures - --Vorarlberg: Camping in tents is generally allowed above the tree line and outside of alpine pastures, but the authorities of the different municipalities can still make their own rules and forbid it.
National parks and other protected natural areas might have even stricter regulations concerning camping – please contact the park authorities to find out about the regulations. Due to this complicated and restrictive regulations, I would recommend you to make use of the many shelters and cottages of the Austrian Alpine Association, which offer a broad network all over Austria.
